Melt Shop

Sheffield Forgemasters’ melt shop produces liquid steel for casting and ingot production, centred on a 105‑tonne furnace capable of producing a wide range of grades. Steel is supplied directly to the foundry or cast into ingots, with air‑cast sizes from 1.5 to 84 tonnes and vacuum‑cast ingots up to 300 tonnes.

Melt Shop capabilities

The melt shop underpins our ability to supply steel in the exact format each project requires. We produce liquid steel for immediate casting or create ingots for forging and customer use, handling multiple grades and casting routes so that material arrives in the precise condition needed for large-scale and technically demanding applications.

Melt Shop Capabilities

Our melt shop is equipped with a 105-tonne capacity Electric Arc Furnace, supported by a 105-tonne Vacuum Arc Degasser and Ladle Furnace for precise steel processing. We also operate an 80-tonne Vacuum Oxygen Decarburisation unit and 300-tonne Vacuum Stream Degas Pits, with lifting capacity of up to 400 tonnes, enabling us to handle the most demanding steel production requirements.

Production Flexibility & Scale

We produce ingots in round, square and octagonal profiles for use in forging, ring rolling and steel production, with our in-house Research & Development team constantly monitoring and improving our steel making processes. Our facilities include 50, 70, 80, 95 and 105-tonne capacity ladles, all equipped with purging and shrouding, enabling us to produce vacuum stream degassed ingots from 60 to 285 tonnes and air-poured solid and hollow ingots from 60 to 200 tonnes.

Quality & Control

We use clean recycled steel and modern monitoring systems to control temperature and steel-making additions with precision.

This ensures high-purity steel with minimal residual elements crucial for sectors like nuclear and defence.
