After completing my studies at school and sixth form, I decided to pursue a career in engineering, driven by my long-standing involvement in STEM subjects. I was keen to find an opportunity that would challenge me and allow me to apply my learning in a real-world environment. Starting my degree apprenticeship as an Apprentice Design Engineer at Sheffield Forgemasters has provided exactly that, enabling me to develop academically, professionally, and personally.
In my role, I have been involved in a range of mechanical design activities, with a particular focus on lifting equipment, design standards, and manufacturing processes. I have also gained valuable experience in the design and manufacture of cast components for offshore applications, working closely with experienced engineers and receiving continuous one-to-one support from my mentor. Being part of such a technically demanding environment has significantly strengthened my understanding of engineering in practice.
Alongside my role, I am studying towards my engineering degree, where I can directly apply theoretical knowledge to live projects. The balance between university learning and hands-on experience has been fundamental to my development, supported by knowledgeable colleagues who have helped build both my confidence and technical capability.
The continued large-scale investment into Sheffield Forgemasters has created an exciting and rapidly evolving environment to be part of, with new facilities, advanced technologies, and long-term programmes shaping the future of the business. This investment not only enhances the overall apprenticeship experience by providing exposure to modern equipment and innovative projects, but also strengthens future career prospects, with clear opportunities to develop and progress within a growing, strategically important organisation. It has also enabled me to actively contribute to these developments, investing my time in supporting key projects and playing a part in helping to shape aspects of this ongoing transformation.
Beyond my day-to-day role, I have been given the opportunity to represent the company at several high-profile events. These include attending Nuclear Week in Parliament, where I spoke with MPs involved in key nuclear policy areas, as well as engaging with my local MP to discuss apprenticeship opportunities and career pathways. I have also had the privilege of representing the company at No.10 Downing Street, contributing to discussions on the impact of Government plans on the business and wider industry, and sharing my perspective as a developing engineer directly with the Prime Minister and Defence Secretary.
Overall, my apprenticeship to date has provided a strong foundation for my future career, allowing me to grow as an engineer while contributing to meaningful, high-impact work within a forward-looking and rapidly developing organisation.
