My apprenticeship in metallurgy has allowed me to combine my interests in science and engineering while taking the next step in my career. After sixth form, I was keen to continue my studies in this area while applying my knowledge in a real working environment. A degree apprenticeship at Sheffield Forgemasters gave me the opportunity to do exactly that.
Today, I work as a Metallurgist in the Melting Department, where we produce steel forging ingots that form the foundation of critical components used in defence, nuclear, and industrial applications. My role involves developing process instructions, providing technical support during steelmaking and casting operations, and working closely with production teams, laboratory staff, and management. I am also involved in post-production investigations and have gained valuable exposure to other areas of the business, which has contributed significantly to my professional development.
One of the most valuable aspects of my apprenticeship has been the support network around me. Throughout my four-year programme, I worked alongside industry experts, former apprentices, and a dedicated mentor who provided guidance and encouragement every day. Regular discussions and involvement in real-world projects helped me build confidence, develop new skills, and take on increasing levels of responsibility.
Completing my apprenticeship enabled me to achieve a bachelor’s degree in Materials Science while gaining four years of practical industry experience. Applying academic knowledge to real manufacturing challenges has given me a much deeper understanding of metallurgy and engineering than I could have gained through classroom learning alone.
The apprenticeship also provided opportunities beyond my day-to-day role. I have represented Sheffield Forgemasters at a range of external events, from speaking to school students about apprenticeship pathways to attending Parliament and engaging with MPs and key figures from the nuclear sector. These experiences have helped me develop communication skills, broaden my industry knowledge, and build confidence in professional environments.
Looking back, choosing an apprenticeship was one of the best decisions I could have made. It allowed me to gain a fully funded degree, valuable industry experience, and a career with a world-class engineering business.
