Sheffield Forgemasters, owned by the Ministry of Defence since 2021, is undergoing one of the UK's most ambitious industrial transformation programmes, with its recapitalisation plan scaled from £900 million to £1.3 billion in response to growing Defence demand. The investment is driving construction of two landmark facilities on the company's historic Brightside Lane site: a new 13,000 tonne Forging Line and a 30,000 m² Machine Shop that will rank among the most advanced large-scale machining facilities in the world.
Meeting the Demands of Modern Defence
When Sheffield Forgemasters was acquired by the MoD in 2021, its recapitalisation programme focused on upgrading legacy assets from the 1960s and 1970s. As Defence requirements evolved, greater resilience, faster production, and significantly reduced lead times became critical. An additional 21 acres of brownfield land was acquired at the former Cammell Laird Brightside Steel Works on Weedon Street to house a purpose-built machining facility. The company supports UK sovereign production of nuclear submarine and warhead programmes through Rolls-Royce Submarines Limited, Babcock International, and the UK’s Atomic Weapons Establishment.

Two Landmark Facilities, One Integrated Vision
The New Machine Shop on Weedon Street will span 30,000m² at 32 metres in height and house 24 new machines, including 15 of the world’s most sophisticated Vertical Turning Lathes. Steel framework erection began in January 2026, with gantry cranes due by October and roofing to follow. The new 13,000 tonne Forging Line, under construction on the north side of Brightside Lane adjacent to the Midland Mainline railway, has been reconfigured with increased furnace, quench tank, and crane capacity to meet an increased Defence production drumbeat. Foundations were completed in early 2026, with steelwork commencing in April. Both facilities will support a new generation of engineers working with Industry 4.0 technologies in nuclear-grade projects.
Impact – A Legacy for the UK
The programme is already delivering measurable impact. Sheffield Forgemasters’ workforce has grown from 600 to more than 750 people, with 25 to 30 apprentices taken on annually. Construction employs more than 900 people on site, with over 35 per cent of total spending retained within Yorkshire. Beyond the regional story, the programme represents a fundamental component of UK sovereign Defence capability, directly supporting nuclear submarine and warhead programmes for decades to come.
